Grouping customers with segments
A segment is a group of your customers described by what they did: what they bought, how recently and how often, how much they've spent, where they ordered and where they are. "Bought hibiscus tea and hasn't ordered in 60 days" is a segment. So is "wholesale customers in Florida who've spent over $500".
You'll find them under Marketing → Segments.
A segment is a set of conditions, not a list
When you save a segment, Iraca saves the conditions, not the customers who matched them that day. Each time you open it, and again whenever a campaign goes out to it, Iraca works out who matches right then.
That's what makes "hasn't ordered in 60 days" useful: a customer who orders tomorrow leaves the segment, and one whose last order turns 60 days old joins it, without you doing anything.
Only people you may email are counted
The number at the top of Who would receive it is only ever customers who:
- have an email address,
- agreed to your marketing emails (see Who you can email),
- and aren't on a suppression list (see Addresses your emails won't go to).
No condition can change that. Below the number, Iraca shows how many other customers matched your conditions and why they aren't counted: they haven't agreed, they're known only from a marketplace like Amazon and can't be asked, they're suppressed, or they have no email address.
Suppliers are never in a segment.
Making a segment
- Go to Marketing → Segments and press New segment.
- Give it a name.
- Press Add a condition and pick what to look at. Add as many as you need.
- Choose whether customers must match all of these conditions or any of these.
- Watch Who would receive it update as you go, with a few of the names it found.
- Press Save segment.
With no conditions at all, a segment is everyone you may email.
Groups
Add a group puts a few conditions together with their own all/any. For example: customers who bought tea (one condition) and who are in Florida or Georgia (a group matching any of two conditions). Groups can hold another group once.
A segment can have up to 25 conditions.
The conditions
| Condition | What it looks at |
|---|---|
| Bought a product | Whether they've ever bought any of the products you pick, or never bought any of them. "Never" includes customers who haven't ordered at all. |
| Bought from a category | The same, for every product in a category. Products you've since deleted still count. |
| Last order | Ordered in the last so many days; hasn't ordered in the last so many days; ordered on or after a date; last ordered before a date. "Hasn't ordered" only includes customers who have ordered at some point. |
| Number of orders | At least, at most or exactly so many orders. "Exactly 0" is customers who have never ordered. |
| Lifetime spend | What their orders came to in goods. Tax, delivery fees and service charges aren't included. |
| Ordered through | Where their orders came from: orders you entered, your customer portal, point of sale, Iraca Marketplace, WooCommerce, Shopify, Amazon, Walmart, Etsy or TikTok Shop. |
| Customer type | Retail or wholesale. |
| Ordered in a menu cycle | Whether they placed an order in any of the meal-prep cycles you pick, or didn't order in any of them. Combine the two to reach people who ordered last week but not this week. Only shown if you sell meal prep with the Menus add-on. |
| Meal prep | Whether they have ever ordered meal prep (an order in any cycle), or never have. Only shown if you sell meal prep. |
| Country, State or province, Postal code | Where they are, from the address on the customer or the shipping address of any of their orders. |
Bought a product, Bought from a category, Number of orders, Ordered through and Meal prep can be narrowed to only orders in the last so many days. Leave it blank for all time.
What counts as an order
Sales orders that were placed: confirmed, waiting for approval, being shipped or shipped. Drafts (including a cart a customer hasn't checked out) and cancelled orders don't count, and neither do your purchase orders to suppliers.
An order's date is when it was placed. For an order imported from a store or marketplace, that's when the customer bought it there, not when it reached Iraca. "In the last 30 days" means the last 30 days counting back from now. A date like "before October 1" uses your business's time zone.
Writing places
- Country: two-letter codes, like
USorCA. - State or province: the country, a colon and the state, like
US:FLorCA:ON. You can write the name instead of the code (US:Florida), and addresses that spell the state out are matched too. - Postal code: a code also matches its ZIP+4, so
60601matches60601-1234. End with*to match every code that starts the same way:606*.
Who can change segments
Everyone on your team can see segments and who's in them. Owners and admins can create, change and delete them. Deleting a segment doesn't change any customer or order.
A segment that a scheduled or sending campaign uses can't be deleted until that campaign is unscheduled or finished. A draft campaign that used it just loses its segment. See Sending a campaign.
