Your First Sale with Iris

The Sell at the register guide gets your register ready and walks you through ringing up one sale on it: where it sells from, how it takes payment, and the sale itself. It needs the Point of Sale add-on.

Start it from Point of Sale or Settings → Point of Sale (the Make your first sale with Iris button), from Iris's plan on your dashboard, or from I want to….

What the guide does, and what it never does

Everything you set in the guide is an ordinary setting, and the sale is an ordinary sale: you can leave at any point with Save and finish later, or do it all by hand from POS Settings and Ringing Up a Sale.

A sale made in the guide is a test sale unless you say otherwise. A test sale is refunded in full when you finish (or when you start over): the money goes back, the goods go back into stock, and the sale comes off your books. Untick This is a test sale before or after the sale to keep it as a real one.

1. The register

This is the The register card from Settings → Point of Sale:

  • Location: the warehouse the register sells from.
  • Receipt header: the line at the top of the register's receipt.

Below it you see the sales tax rate the register charges. That's your business's rate, set on Settings → Organization, so it applies to your sales orders too; Change the tax rate takes you there.

If your business has no warehouse yet, the guide asks you to add one first: the register needs somewhere to take stock from.

Only someone who can manage the register can change these settings. A cashier sees them and can go on to the sale.

2. Card or cash

  • Cash always works.
  • Cards go through your Stripe account connected to Iraca, typed on the screen, paid with a phone wallet, or on a Stripe card reader. The guide lists your readers and links to Add a card reader.
  • If Stripe isn't connected yet, the register takes cash only, and Set up card payments opens the Get paid guide. You can still go on and make a cash sale.

3. A sale

The guide opens the register itself, the same one as Point of Sale. Add a product, tap Charge, and take cash or a card as you would at the counter. Once the sale goes through, the guide shows it with a link to its order.

Refund the test sale and finish refunds it through the register's own refund (see Refunding a sale):

  • Paid by card: the full amount goes back to the card. Stripe keeps its card fee and Iraca keeps its payment fee, so a card test costs those fees.
  • Paid in cash: hand the money back; Iraca records it.

If the refund can't be made (the month is closed in Reports → Period Locks, say), the guide doesn't finish and says why.

A real sale (the box unticked) stays a sale when you finish.

Who can do what

Anyone who can sell at the register can walk the guide and make the sale. Finishing and starting over refund the test sale, so they need Manage point of sale settings (owners and admins have it). A cashier who makes a test sale asks a manager to finish.

Starting over

Start over refunds a test sale the guide made and changes nothing else: your register settings, readers and any real sale stay as they are.

This guide covers the Iraca app and its add-ons. The Iraca Marketplace is documented separately.
